R.A.D. is
an Action/Realtime strategy game. The game was inspired by the
Megadrive/Genesis game Herzog-Zwei
Your goal is to destroy the enemy headquarters by building
units from conquered factories and sending them to the enemy base. The
difference between this game and other realtime strategy games is that
you don't control a cursor to select and place units. You control a
transporter plane to place the units and you can also transform to go
into battle yourself.
The game is programmed by me Leon Droog and my good friend Rik
Verlinde.
The game is already fully playable including two player splitscreen,
forthcomming releases will include networking and more levels. To get
the latest version of RAD go to the DOWNLOAD
page.
State of the game 29 august 2003: I
have been busy rewriting the code to fit in with the new network library
I wanted to use. The library turned out to be a little dissapointing,
so now I have to look for another one. I am planning that the next
release will be the final release which will include all the remaining
levels and networking functionality. Meanwhile, this website has
crossed the boundry of 10,000 visitors and more than 3,000 downloads
(propably a multitude of that figure since the game is also hosted on
other sites like gamehippo and
tucows). Now that the game is featured on remakes.org these figures will
propably rise even higher.
I am on vacation the next two weeks, so expect some delay in reply when
you mail me.
State of the game
23 may 2003: It
has been quite for some time on the website. After the last release we
have taken a break from programming RAD. At the moment I'm very
busy and I have to find some time to start working on the next
release, which will hopefully be the complete version which
will include all levels and networking.
Some people have offered create graphics, levels and music for the
game. I thought it would be a cool idea to make a section on this
website where I can put levels and graphics that are made by
other people. If you are interested in making your own levels,
take a look at this link where I explain how you can make your own levels for the game
State of the game
17 february 2003: It
seemed that the download of version 1.1b was not working on some
computers, or rather my own pc was the only one on which 1.1b
this version was working.. I have now uploaded the old version
1.1a which contained only a bug in the setup that is now fixed.
State of the game
10 february 2003: Rad
version 1.1 is availavle now. Go to the Download
page to get the latest version.
Improvements
in version 1.1
-navigation map
-new levels, Aquar, Luna-T and an extra deathmatch level.
-new soundtracks for each level
-new gunship unit
-crosshairs to help aiming
-Lots of bugfixing
-volume setting works
-quit dialog when pressing esc during the game.
-improved intelligence of computerplayer. (although it still needs lots
more work)
State of the
game 5 february 2003: We are working hard to release the new version of Rapid
Aerial Deployment this weekend on the site. In the meantime
check out some screenshots of the new version.
State of the
game 15 january 2003: Since it has been almost 2 months since some news has been
put up the site, I thought it fair to let you know the current
status of RAD. Busy with the holidays and installing a new
computer has left me little time to work on RAD. But don't
worry, work has begun on the new update. I wanted to release a
new version the end of this month, but that will probably be a
bit later. Rik has been working on a Radar/Map which will
hopefully will be included in the new version. Further more a new
unit, the gunship, will be added, it will be a slow moving boat equally
powerfull as the turret. Also new levels will be included, some
bugs will be fixed and the game will be better balanced, as
requested by the people on the forum .
I would
like to thank all the people on the forum helping us find bugs ,balance
the game, giving ideas or just complimenting us on our work.
State of the game 20 november 2002: Hurrah! Today we have just passed the 1000 downloads mark
since the first version was released in july. To balance the
game better, post any comment to tune the power of different
units on the forum.
We love to hear about your feedback.
State of the game 29 october 2002:
Yes! It's there.
the new demo of RAD. This version contains the splitscreen multiplayer
version, so finally RAD can be played as it was intended, multiplayer.
Go to the DOWNLOAD page to download the
latest version. There have been a lot of improvements over former version:
-splitscreen
multiplayer gaming!
-stage
selection
-2 new stages
-tutorial game
-options screen
-game stats
-mouse support
-improved intelligence of the computer player
State of the
game 14 october 2002:
Since
Rik has reinstalled CVS, development has sped up again. Stage
selection and mouse support in the introscreens have been added
and work on the stage select is finished meanwhile Rik is
working on stereo support. After some experimenting I had a
splitscreen version of W-RAD going pretty quickly. I hope to have
finished the splitscreen multiplayer version soon. Expect a new release
of the RAD demo pretty soon.
State of the game
2 october 2002:
Currently
working on and of on the project, Rik and I are not able to
work together much because we have to set up the CVS again. At
the moment the the options screen is finished, here you can
setup a windowed/fullscreen game and remap the keys. The next
thing I want to finish is the Stage selection screen. checkout a
preview below. together with the stage selection screen there
will be some new levels to play and I will release a new version of
W-R.A.D on this website.
State of the game 6
september 2002:
There have been some problems migrating the website to a new server
just when I was on vacation. The website was down for a few days and the
forums will have to be set up again.
On the positive side, Rik and I have decided to cooperate with AGFRAG who will be taking care of
graphics and level design as well as promote the game and other
stuff. This leaves us time to work on the RAD-engine. There
will propably be a name change for the game, but Rapid Aerial
Deployment will remain as a subtitle to avoid confusion.
State of the
game 2 august 2002: Since
the release of the RAD demo there now have been more than 500
downloads of the demo. We have been receiving lots of reactions,
so Rik installed a user forum where you can post comments or
discuss anything related to the game. click on the following
link to go to the users FORUM.
Please take a look, at the forum, we love to receive some feedback from
you..
State of the
game 23 july 2002: It's
finally there! the first real DEMO of Rapid Aerial deployment.
This version contains all the features I wanted to have in the
game. So there is now sound, sams and turrets fire missiles and
the refuelers can refuel other units. Still there is lots of
work to be done, new locations, more music, multiplayer better
computer intelligence and lots of bugs to be fixed. Until that
happens, have fun with this demo, go HERE to
download the game.
State of the
game 15 july 2002: Currently
working to make a definite demo, which features sound, music, missiles,
better graphics, some fixed bugs and more options, like a CPU vs CPU
game. I hope to release this demo one of the following weeks.
State of the
game 5 july 2002: I
Had promised a demo of RAD by the end of june. It's a bit later
as promised, but her is the demo anyway. It is not quite a
complete demo. No end of game sequence, SAMs can't shoot
missiles and planes can't collide. These things i wanted to
include for this release. But since I will be very busy the next few
days I decided to release the demo anyway. Just download the file HERE (1.7Mb), unzip the file and execute
Rad.exe to start the game. To play the game press ENTER on the
intro screen, to control the game use "X" to shoot, "C" for
transform/pickup/select and "SPACE" for the build menu. Use
"BACKSPACE" to toggle between yourself and the computer player's
view. Read the RadManual.doc for more detailed instructions.
Have Fun!
State of the
game 17 june 2002: The
game is taking shape more and more All units in the are now working
properly and are able to carry out orders like attack, defend,
conquer. I am currently working on the intelligence of the
computer player. Making the computer think strategically is
both challeging and fun. I still hope to release the demo by
the end of the month as soon as I get the artificial inteligence
working.
State of
the game 24 may 2002: We've
installed winCVS (a program that enables a group to work on the
same project), it works pretty good and I realised we should
have used winCVS much earlier. We have made a lot of progress
the last few days and I have got the feeling that we are really
getting somewhere. If all goes well, I hope to release a crude
demo version of RAD next month.
State of the game 23 april 2002:
Finished with the graphics for the intro of the game. I made a flash
animation for the introduction story of the game, it is placed HERE, The
music is by Gilbert Droog.
State of the
game 10 april 2002:
Rik and I are still hard at work with the game. Rik has been working
implementing the sound in the game and working on the units. My brorther
has offered to write the music for the game I'm soon posting
some music on the site. I have managed to speed up the
multiplayer communication, but still it isn't fast enough. So I
took a break from the network part and now I am busy creating
some intro graphics and writing some tutorials for www.elysiun.com. I just
wrote my first tutorial in how to create sprites and tile graphics
with blender click on this link to go there TUTORIAL1.
State of the game 7 february 2002:
Just discovered the
option for orthogonal projection in blender 3d, so now i'm able to
render the tiles with it, instead of with photoshop, it looks much
better than that handdrawn tiles, check out the screenshot of
the tiles of the Alien world. I'm currently working to get the
networking code running faster, while Rik is working on the
sound-fx and cleaning up some stuff.
